7th National Summit for Community Cancer Control

The BC Cancer Agency

BC Cancer Agency Professional Education Day launches
three-day national Summit, June 11, 2009

Dr. Susan O'Reilly“We welcome all Summit delegates to participate in BC Cancer Agency Professional Education Day on Thursday, June 11,” says Dr. Susan O’Reilly, Vice President, Cancer Care, who is leading the Agency’s organizing group planning this special professional development meeting.

“The BC Cancer Agency’s participation in the 7th National Summit on Community Cancer Control replaces the 2009 BC Cancer Agency annual cancer conference, normally held in November in Vancouver,” states Dr. O’Reilly.

“We decided to cancel our own annual cancer conference this year in order to support this important national Summit. The meeting theme is Innovative & Workable Solutions for Rural & Remote Cancer Control Issues. It is particularly relevant in British Columbia since we are fully engaged, with our partners – Northern Health and the Provincial Health Services Authority - in implementing the Northern Cancer Control Strategy, as well as in planning the opening in 2012 of the new BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North in Prince George.”

“However,” continues Dr. O’Reilly, “we also realized that our specialty groups, which usually hold their annual learning events at our conference, still require the opportunity to meet, so we have planned BC Cancer Agency Professional Education Day to launch the three-day Summit on Thursday, June 11.”

“Twenty presenters in six specialty disciplines will host valuable learning sessions of interest not only to our provincial colleagues, but to all delegates attending the Summit from across the country,” adds Dr. O’Reilly. Delegates may choose from Nursing Oncology, Nutrition Oncology, Oral Oncology, Pain and Symptom Management/Palliative Care and Psychosocial Oncology. Plus the BC Cancer Agency is teaming up with Northern Health to offer a separate public cancer forum at the Ramada Hotel in Prince George on June 11 for members of the community.

All program details of the BC Cancer Agency Professional Education Day sessions follow here on the web site, plus they are listed as options on the Summit registration form.
“We’d like to fill every session, and encourage all delegates to take advantage of the unique offerings available on June 11,” exclaims Dr. O’Reilly. “Please join us!”
